Mark 8:33 (Berean Study Bible)
Get behind Me, Satan!
Satan pretends to love us. He wants us to put ourselves and our needs ahead of God. We know how he seduced Adam and Eve in the garden. We see the same lie being espoused by ministers who suggest that if we love enough and work hard enough, we can save ourselves and become like God. In contrast, Christ always put the needs of the Father ahead of His own. He didn't hesitate to be crucified on the cross and was irate that the well-meaning disciples wanted to protect Him from what was about to befall Him. A life abandoned to God is always selfless but anyone who protects themselves behind the veneer of legalistic righteousness can not love as they are afraid of getting sullied in the valley of demons.
